    I requested this song, and it seemed to be popular, because people were
    flocking to join me. I felt like a trendsetter, a rock star – practically as important as the
    band!

    Four glasses of prosecco, two glasses of rosé and two shots down, I was having
    the time of my life, awash with a warmth and elation I hadn’t experienced in a while.

    In my 20s, I would get this drunk every week. In my 30s, I drank less, but alcohol was still a vital reward for the grind of working
    motherhood.

    But in January 2022, aged 43, I realised it was making me anxious and gave it up altogether for two years.
    Until, perversely, the thought of not drinking again also made
    me feel anxious – my sobriety yet another form of perfectionism that put me on a pedestal it would be more
    painful to fall from the longer I abstained.

    Since then, I have drunk most months, although I’ve only had about six
    glasses of wine this year. So this latest event featuring my Bryan Adams homage was the first time
    I had overdone it since last year. 

    Until I woke with a start at 5am the next morning, that is, the bedside light
    I forgot to turn off before I crashed out still shining in my face as if I was being interrogated.

    My throat was dry, my head a throbbing husk.

    My husband Chris sensibly decamped to the spare room.

    Memories of the hat, the dancing, the drinks flickered back, and I felt
    conflicted. I was still pretty sure I’d had fun, but given the hangover and the anxiety that would inevitably worsen as the day went on, I was already starting
    to wonder – was it really worth it?

    Like many of us, my relationship with alcohol is complex and constantly evolving.
    Drinking so little in 2025 hasn’t felt like a sacrifice – the more I understand the damaging
    effects of alcohol, and the reasons I drink, the less it
    appeals.

    But arriving at this charity fundraiser a week ago, there were all the hallmarks of a big night out.
    Moderate-drinking husband safely parked at home?
    Check. Pre-paid booze with dinner? Check. Friends
    I hadn’t seen properly in weeks? Check.

    They’d also left their partners behind. We’re more likely
    to catch up on WhatsApp or watching school sports games than drinking wine nowadays.
    Seeing them in the flesh with no cricket bat in sight was exhilarating.
    None of us was driving and a voice in my brain said: ‘Sod it!’

    Not that I was planning to go overboard, but I am usually the fastest to drink in any group setting and had probably had at least three glasses of prosecco by the time they’d finished their second.
    At which point a woman we didn’t know arrived, having been put
    on our table, also without her husband – or a taxi booked, because she didn’t want to set a limit on the night.

    How refreshingly spontaneous, I thought. Why can’t
    I be like that? I’d pre-ordered sea bream from the menu circulated beforehand because
    sober Antonia makes sensible food choices. But by the
    time our main course arrived I was ravenous.

    The woman – I’ll call her Natasha – gave me the naan bread from her curry.
    ‘That’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me,’ I said,
    and meant it.

    The rapport felt instant, the laughter raucous, our newfound friendship as rewarding as the bottle of rosé she ordered, and my spirits so
    high that when the auction started after dinner, I bid £500 for a week’s holiday in Norfolk. 

    No matter that we have already booked a week’s holiday in Norfolk this summer, nor
    that I didn’t know whereabouts in the county this property actually was.

    ‘We’ll tag them together and make it a fortnight!’
    I thought, with the logic of someone on their fourth drink.

    Luckily, I was outbid, and as adrenaline segued into sedation from the rosé, a sense of calm washed over me.
    It was as if I had taken a holiday from myself: the constant internal chatter
    in my mind; my never-ending to-do list.

    ‘Create a life you don’t want to escape from,’ is a popular saying in the sober community,
    and one I agree with. But surely even the most well-adjusted among us need a break from our thoughts occasionally, and as my 40s advance, and with them
    my responsibilities, I feel an ever greater pressure to succeed at work, stay healthy, parent compassionately and so on.

    Alcohol switched off the relentless expectations I
    place on myself, and for a few minutes I remember
    feeling completely, blissfully, free.

    ‘Let’s have shots!’ said Natasha at around 10pm and bought a
    round of Baby Guinness – a mix of Baileys and Amaretto in a tiny glass that
    looks like the black stuff I despise but ‘DOESN’T HAVE
    ANY GUINNESS IN IT!’ Something I yelled at anyone who would listen, repeatedly, compelled to spread the word about this ingenious new drink.

    Returning to the bar to buy more, it felt like I was back at university – not 46 with
    deadlines and a dodgy Achilles tendon. When my taxi arrived
    at 11.30pm I was aggrieved; I could have carried on for ever.

    In the morning, of course, it’s always a different
    story.

    I normally wake at around 5am anyway to exercise but was in no fit state to lift weights.
    Nor was I able to go back to sleep. I checked my phone to discover I had messaged my friends who were present, from the bar,
    at 10.22pm.

    ‘Would you like a limoncello? Or peach schnapps?Or
    slippery nipple? I know it sounds weird but we did have it in the 1990s.’

    Nobody had replied. Oh God! Last night I thought I was witty.
    Now I was convinced I was an annoying, self-absorbed bore.
    I can’t trust myself when I’m drunk, I realise, which is a
    horrible feeling – like having a friend who always lets
    you down.

    I am better at reining myself in nowadays but I will
    still always say something inappropriate or slightly off-kilter.
    I cringed when I recalled how I bragged about how
    brilliant my children are; and, ironically, the exposé I wanted
    to write about the alcohol industry.

    That the end of the evening was a blur only exacerbated my paranoia.

    Did I really see my hairdresser on the dance floor? What did we talk about?

    I normally eat yoghurt and seeds for breakfast, but the morming after craved
    carbs and wolfed down three slices of toast spread thick with butter.

    For lunch, I ate the leftover Chinese Chris
    ordered for the family the previous night, even though
    I usually have salad. I topped it off with a Snickers as I
    tried to force myself to garden, read, or finish some work.

    But I didn’t have the focus. I used to enjoy the enforced inertia hangovers dictated.
    Now, wasting time because I have poisoned myself seems criminal,
    and compounds my certainty that I will never do anything meaningful
    with my life again.

    Guilt made me keep my misery from my family, though.
    My daughter, 14, didn’t notice I was hungover, later telling me: ‘I think maybe you were being nicer to make up for it.’ A plus, I
    suppose.

    I ate two packets of crisps before dinner. Once surrendering to unhealthy
    snacks after a night out was all part of the fun, but
    in midlife my body can’t cope with the avalanche of ultra-processed food.
    I feel jittery and get a stomach ache.

    Lying on the sofa that evening, I thought about Natasha.

    All models have known biases or “quirks” where they tend to overpredict or underpredict certain things. The GFS is known to overpredict tropical storms and hurricanes in longer-term forecasts that look more than a week into the future, which leads to these false alarms. The GFS isn’t alone in this — all models struggle to accurately predict tropical activity that far in advance — but it is notorious for doing so.

    For example, the GFS could spit out a prediction for a US hurricane landfall about 10 days from now, only to have that chance completely disappear as the forecast date draws closer. This can occur at any time of the year, but is most frequent during hurricane season — June through November.

    It’s exactly what’s been happening over the past week as forecasters keep an eye out for the first storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
    Why so many ghosts?
    No weather forecast model is designed in the exact same way as another, and that’s why each can generate different results with similar data.

    The reason the GFS has more false alarms when looking more than a week out than similar models – like Europe’s ECMWF, Canada’s CMC or the United Kingdom’s UKM – is because that’s exactly what it’s programmed to do, according to Alicia Bentley, the global verification project lead of NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center.

    The GFS was built with a “weak parameterized cumulus convection scheme,” according to Bentley. In plain language, that means when the GFS thinks there could be thunderstorms developing in an area where tropical systems are possible – over the oceans – it’s more likely to jump to the conclusion that something tropical will develop than to ignore it.

    Other models aren’t built to be quite as sensitive to this phenomenon, and so they don’t show a tropical system until they’re more confident the right conditions are in place, which usually happens when the forecast gets closer in time.

    The western Caribbean Sea is one of the GFS’ favorite places to predict a ghost storm. That’s because of the Central American gyre: a large, disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms that rotates over the region and its surrounding water.
